Home Renovation Design Ideas; Blending the Old with the New

A home renovation is exciting and the possibilities are absolutely endless. Rising in popularity, often due to Heritage Overlays, is the notion of keeping the traditional home’s architecture or ‘shell” and creating an interior renovation that is more contemporary and user friendly.

This is largely driven by the fact that the internal volumes of older homes, were really designed for the way families used to live in a space. However this has really changed and evolved and now days we live in a much more interactive fashion ,where our living spaces are opened up and spill seamlessly onto each other. Hence forth, the desire to knock down the pokey volumes of days of yore, and creating larger internal volumes in our homes.

This opens up a wealth of possibilities, and offers a blank canvas with which to paint your dream home. Keeping the original façade with minimal updates to it, sees a necessary transition point, or clever way to tie your new internal with the old façade.

If feasible, a great outcome is to keep the front of house as this is where the best of the historical details reside. Often the work here to be done is restorative & the link between the old & new is created here via the interior decoration of the space, the colour, furniture & finishes.

CONTRAST BETWEEN THE OLD & NEW RENOVATION

Keeping existing architectural elements such as brick, sandstone or bluestone exposed and contrast it with slick hard lines of concrete, sharp white walls and contemporary wide board neutral timber floorboards, works really well.  Consider the addition of other internal architectural features such as glass walls or balustrades, and suddenly you are creating a beautiful way to mesh the old and new.

HOW TO COMPLEMENT THE PERIOD HOME FEATURES WITH THE NEW SPACE

Keeping your internal plaster features such as cornices, skirtings ,pressed metal ceilings and ceiling roses is not only attractive, but also a lovely subtle nod to the history and original charm of your home. This look is done best when these plaster elements are painted in the crispest of matt white paints. Contrasting them with a deeper contemporary wall colour really looks stunning and echoes the aesthetic of very best homes in Europe.

RENOVATING & INTEGRATING THE KITCHEN AND BATHROOMS

These areas are always the big ticket items in any home. The trend is defiantly to visually open up these spaces as much as is possible, as well as making them highly ergonomic and functional. This is the way that we have to live, so it’s best to make the kitchen and bathrooms as contemporary as you feel comfortable with or play with paying a homage` to the homes past traditionally or with a modern edge.

COMBINING FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES

This is perhaps the tricky component of tying the old in with the new renovation. The best way to approach this, is the areas that are the newest and most contemporary in design such as the kitchen, can handle some more traditional styling, while in the spaces that have the original architectural features, it is ideal to have some very contemporary designer pieces.  An example in the kitchen is that you could use some more traditional or metal pendant lights while in the powder room you may consider doing a large decoratively framed mirror. In the living spaces where you may have exposed stone and heavy plasterwork, using some slick designer furniture paired with a bold geometric rug, would work beautifully.
